Description A child in a sandbox. An architect at a construction site. A high wire shimmering over an Italian piazza. Aliens performing at a cosmic discotheque. All are touched by the solar wind, a magical energy force that transforms everyday life into a playful world blending fantasy with acrobatic performance. Since its inception in 1984, Cirque du Soleil has delighted spectators in more than 100 cities around the world. Now for the first time, Cirque du Soleil presents Solstrom, a new and extraordinary 13-part television series.
Amazon.com Solstrom is a 13-part variety series starring members of Canada?s Cirque du Soleil along with some new discoveries. Originally broadcast on Bravo in the US, each episode has a different national identity and features numerous feats of gravity-defying derring-do. The performers hail from Cirque productions Dralion, Zumanity, La Nouba, Saltimbanco, Varekai, Alegria, Mystere, Quidam, and "O." Wind is the overriding theme, specifically a "solar wind" that transforms ordinary citizens into graceful athletes. "Wind of Romance," for instance, is set in an Italian villa where the inhabitants interact through gestures rather than words. A love affair is played out on a clothesline-as-tightrope, a suitor woos his intended out of a painting through acrobatics, a couple fights and makes up through juggling, and another re-connects via flashback to an aerial pas de deux. Other acts incorporate pyrotechnics, unicycles, and physical comedy. Brazil is the setting for "Twin Winds," which focuses on duos and features contortionists, jugglers, aerial straps, and boleadoras (tap dancers with stone-tipped ropes). Other settings: Romania ("Howling Wind"), Paris ("Rockin' Wind"), London ("Once Upon a Wind"), the Caribbean ("Wind of Freedom"), Hollywood ("Ghostly Wind"), Nevada ("Gone With the Winds"), Quebec ("Wind From the Past" and "Winds of Courage"), New York City ("Wind of Imagination"), Salzburg ("Wind of Life"), and even outer space ("Cosmic Wind"). There are a few special guests along for the ride: Naomi Campbell in "Ghostly Wind," Dave Coulthard in "Gone With the Winds," and Milla Jovovich, Christopher Lambert, and Deepak Chopra in "Cosmic Wind." A somewhat irritating mad scientist character named Fogus Punch (Cirque regular John Gilkey with voice by Alex Ivanovici), who discovered the solar wind, introduces each episode. Fortunately, his screen time is mostly limited to the opening sequence and the occasional reaction shot. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Brilliant! December 24, 2008 Even though this is a series and not the actual live show, it is truly brilliant once you "get into it"! My younger children absolutely love watching these episodes over and over again. And as a parent, I'd say it's a much better thing for them to watch than a lot of the junk featured on TV! I loved this so much I even bought this for my grandmother and she simply loves it, too! The acts featured in these episodes are simply amazing!!!! Also, be sure to watch the "making of the episodes" segment on the last DVD, it's incredible how they filmed these all with only two takes per act! Overall, this series is a "must see" for anyone appreciates the circus arts!
I am pissed... September 28, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The review of solstrom Cirque du Soleil - Solstrom - The Complete Series before I hit the purchase button is "do not have original covers, some scratches but still play well."
The true is, the disc are from a rental shop named Red Hook Family Video, were badly scratched, do not play well and go on halt intermittently. All disc were not hold up to the push point and position in the disc holding, incurred more new scrathes during the handling. I suspect this was done on purpose to camouflage the already bad condition.
I do not mind that the covers are not in original version but they are in 19 x 13 x 1.5 cm disc cover, they are quick bulky and take up additional weigth and space of my parcel and made me pay more.
I am a customer on the other part of the globe and I heard that refund and return are very much a hassle and time consuming, laborious excercise. I can then only suffer in silent.
I strongly urge that do not believe in the review when it says only light scracthes. Amazon should bar this dealer as he/ she is not honest.
Fabulous Family Entertainment July 13, 2008 When this originally aired on television, our family(husband, son 10, daughter 6 and myself) would gather around the t.v. set and eagerly await each Sunday night's episode. It was amazing and we looked forward to each episode. Here it is several years later, my son and I have gone to see Cirque du Soleil live, and have never forgotten watching it as a family and enjoying our family time. When my son recently received money, he asked me to purchase "Solstrom". The acts are incredible and the costumes and music are beautiful. Since this was a series, we look forward to seeing the same characters appear throughout the different episodes and it is as enjoyable today as it was years ago. In fact my children can appreciate some thing more now, than they did when they were younger. A must see!!!

This is a great collection for Cirque fans. You can see the "progression" of the quality and professionalism over the years. This is a good collection to have especially for folks not fortunate enough to have seen these 'live'. One DVD allows the viewer to select from different camera angles to watch. Neat addition! Sound and picture quality are very good. Glad I got it............Kevin S
Not too bad August 14, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Before purchasing this and watching the previews.. I assumed that its ALL the cirque du soleil acts with the actors without their makeups on.. and I thought that was a pretty cool concept. The first episode which took place in an Italian setting was really cool. I was able to name certain acts from certain shows, but there were a couple that I had no clue where they came from. I just assumed they were from older shows. I didn't really realize until the second episode that its a bunch of acts from cirque, mixed in with non-cirque acts. Overall, I'd have to say it was pretty decent. It was definitely entertaining.
