Description Imagine being a hunter leading highly trained bloodhounds in pursuit of a killer...and the trail leads directly to you! Starring Academy-AwardA(r) winners Kevin Costner* and Gene Hackman,** No Way Out is "a mesmerizing look at Washington power" (The Hollywood Reporter).Capturing a well-deserved four stars from critic Roger Ebert, this "taut [and] stylish" (Newsweek) thriller is fast-paced and powerful"a perfect nailbiter" (Variety)! In a fit of rage, Secretary of Defense David Brice (Hackman) murders his mistress. To keep a lid on the scandal, Brice's loyal aide (Will Patton) creates the perfect cover-up: he "invents" a more enticing killera Russian spyand then enlists naval commander Tom Farrell (Costner) to find him. But as achilling twist of fate would have it, Farrell also has a strong connection to the victim and now all the clues he's been hired to uncover are leading straight to him! In a desperate race against time, Farrell's search for the killer is not only a matter of national security, but also a matter of saving his own hide. *1990: Director and Picture, Dances with Wolves **1971:Actor, The French Connection; 1992: Supporting Actor, Unforgiven
Amazon.com This implausible, but effective 1987 film stars Kevin Costner (Bull Durham, Wyatt Earp) as a naval officer and CIA agent who may not be what he seems. This sexy thriller is an espionage mystery and an enigmatic character study of two men trying to be faithful to the loyalties they hold. Costner begins a torrid love affair with the mistress (Sean Young) of the Secretary of Defense, but when she turns up dead, Costner is implicated in a web of intrigue that threatens national security and exposes personal secrets at the highest levels. The Secretary and his men try to cover up the affair while simultaneously searching for a Soviet mole in their ranks. Featuring an exciting chase sequence through the Washington, D.C., subways, No Way Out is a standard issue thriller that nonetheless keeps the action coming. --Robert Lane

AWESOME SUSPENSE FILM November 25, 2008 I TOTALLY AGREE WITH REST OF VIEWERS,KEVIN COSTNERS BEST MOVIE,HES BRILLIANT.ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE CAST HELPED MAKE THIS MOVIE A 5 STARRER.BY ROSE
internal affair November 25, 2008 I loved this movie years ago. NO WAY OUT is outlandish Hollywood fantasy that is not pretending, I don't think, to be anything other than entertaining escapism. If viewed as anything more serious, deduct 1 star from my rating. I glimpsed the blurbs included in the product description above and would agree NO WAY OUT is mesmerizing, but if you want a serious look at Washington power, the Pentagon, the CIA, etc., then check out fantastic documentaries like UNCOVERED TRUTH, THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, etc., etc., here on Amazon. Getting your ideas about power from a Kevin Costner movie is stupid. In anycase, NO WAY OUT is an enjoyable "nailbiter". Very "taut" and "stylish" Hollywood filmmaking. Too bad about Sean Young. What the?? I'm going to look her up on wikipedia in a second. Back in the 80s... she was drop dead gorgeous. Hah, I made a joke.
Nail biting stuff!! November 2, 2008 Even though this movie is getting on in years, I watched it for the first time recently and found it to be a thoroughly entertaining, suspenseful movie. One sits there hoping there WILL be a way out...
Nice slight of hand October 29, 2008 For a twenty years old movie , No Way Out holds up very well. (From automobiles to clothing, it's easy to forget it is not a current release.) Like The Sixth Sense (Collector's Edition Series), the ending is a shocker and the build up exceptionally well crafted. If you've never seen the movie, you're in for a treat. If you have seen it and know the ending, it's still interesting to watch how the film makers lead the viewer along a apparently obvious path until the very end. Both films cleverly use movie cliches standardized characters to seduce the audience.

No Way. Out. September 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is 1987, mid way through Ronald Reagan's second term. 1987 is the year of the Iran Contra scandal and a big stock market crash. The Cold War with the Soviet Union is still being waged, but soon it will come to an end. George H. W. Bush and Dan Quayle will be our next president and vice president. Naval hero Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) is summoned to the pentagon by Secretary of Defense, David Brice (Gene Hackman). At a posh political function the dashing commander hits on a glamorous woman and is shot down. But he makes a brash exit, claiming she is interested, and she follows him to the bar. As they get to know each other, they exchange these tender words:
----------------------- Susan Atwell: Are you one of them? Tom Farrell: One of what? Susan Atwell: These hypocrites. All posh and shiny getting ready for four more years of ******* it to the rest of us. Tom Farrell: You're pretty cynical. Susan Atwell: Adequate to the occasion. =======================
They begin an intense affair, but as things start to get serious, it becomes evident that she is a kept woman, the mistress of a powerful man in Washington. Tom Farrell presses her for details.
----------------------- Susan Atwell: It's David Brice, Secretary of Defense. Satisfied? Tom Farrell: You know I work for Brice? Susan Atwell: I guess that makes two of us. =======================
Sean Young is great in this movie, but her performance is not enough to save this movie. Still, it's worth it to at least watch the first half just to see her go. If you are a fan of tempestuous romance between strangers, you will enjoy this part (the only thing that mars an otherwise enjoyable sequence of events is when they play "Say It" by Paul Anka and Richard Marx. the song may have been composed especially for this film, since there is a repeated refrain that says 'no way out'). No Way Out might be among Sean Young's best performances, but as her notoriously bad luck would have it, that isn't enough. Kevin Costner makes a pretty good action hero, but the story is not at all believable.
At one point he realizes that two assassins have been dispatched to kill Susan Atwell's friend Nina Beka (Iman). He rushes out of the pentagon, comandeers a car from the motor pool, chases them, smashes his car into theirs, jumps off the bridge into a tree and then runs away on foot. They pursue him, but he manages to jump the turnstile of the subway and get on a train in the nick of time. He takes the subway to a shopping mall where Nina works and warns her. She escapes, but the assassins capture him. They take him back to the pentagon, where somehow he is magically protected, and he resumes his old job, heading up the investigation to find the man who was with Susan Atwell, i.e., himself. No mention of him smashing the car and pulling a Halle Berry. No mention of him not paying his subway fare. He is barely reprimanded for his erratic behavior. Seeing this, I flashed back to the night they met:
----------------------- [the band has started playing ''D'ya think I'm Sexy' by Rod Stewart and two people start disco dancing] Susan Atwell: We've got a potential nausea situation building here! =======================
I couldn't have said it better myself, Susan.
No way. Out!
