Editorial Reviews:

Description
Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney both won Oscars(R) in 1938 for their work in this touching and inspirational story of Father Flanagan and his young, delinquent charges. Year: 1938 Director: Norman Taurog Starring: Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Henry Hull

Amazon.com essential video
Spencer Tracy won an Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, who opens Boys Town and dedicates himself to helping juvenile delinquents go straight. Mickey Rooney plays one of the tougher kids, figuring out early on that Flanagan is nobody's fool. Warmhearted and inspiring, the film's inevitable sentimentality is nicely cut by Tracy's performance and a smart script by Eleanore Griffin and Dore Schary (who also won Oscars). A good film for all ages, directed by Norman Taurog (Adventures of Tom Sawyer). --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars NEBRASKA'S HOME OPENER-2008   March 5, 2008
Tracy won his second consecutive Oscar, portraying the eminent Fr. Edward Flanagan, founder of Boys Town, Omaha Nebraska. While the movie is biographically way off, the ultimate goal of one man stands today for all to see, visit, perhaps attend. It is probably the first movie I ever saw on television, and a favorite of my father, who first saw it in 1938. And why not? Tracy's performance is augmented by a cast of hundreds, all seemingly perfectly cast One knew early on that Rooney could cut the mustard; one of the best actors of any age, his smallish stature limiting his roles, but totally unforgettable here as Whitey Marsh.Kudos also to Reynolds, Hull and Fenton, doing their best to avoid turning the film into a melodrama. Nothing makes me madder than when some cocksure rookie reviewer labels this movie as "syrupy" or "corny". This was, is, will be always the genuine article.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Boys Town and Men of Boys Town   February 13, 2008
Boys Town/Men of Boy's Town DVD is a wonderful example of what it takes to help troubled boys to grow up being responsible leaders in their own communities. Spencer Tracy shows great compassion for these boys. Father Flanigan was a man of faith and expected miracles from the Lord. This movie does a wonderful job of portraying the life of the real Boys Town.

Compassion and tough leadership needs to be built in our young people and this movie is a great example of doing exactly that.
